The year 2023 is nearly over, but we can’t forget the live events that entertained, thrilled, and amazed us. From record-breaking sports victories to awe-inspiring musical performances, the year has been a rollercoaster of emotions and experiences.
Before we ring in the New Year, let’s take a look back at some of the biggest events of 2023.
The Eras Tour
Pop royalty Taylor Swift kicked off her sixth concert tour in March 2023. Called “The Eras Tour,” the concert series took audiences on a journey through Swift’s extensive discography, from her first album, Taylor Swift (2006), to Midnights (2022).
The Eras Tour has 151 shows on five continents, and with a revenue of over $900 million, it is set to surpass Elton John’s farewell tour as the highest-grossing concert tour of all time. This achievement is even more impressive considering the Eras Tour has been running for less than a year, and the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which made $930 million, ran for five years.
The Eras Tour is much more than a series of live events. Fans liken it to a cultural movement. In many cities, fans prepare for Swift’s show by holding and attending Taylor Swift-themed special events, from dance parties to trivia nights. Fans make friendship bracelets to give away to others and plan their outfits to represent their favorite eras and songs.
The shows themselves are visual and aural spectacles. The stage featured several sets as well as various lights and lighting effects, lasers, and even pyrotechnics that, combined with Swift’s performances, created an immersive experience.
The Renaissance World Tour
Beyoncé announced a world tour supporting her album Renaissance in February 2023, mere days before she broke records at the Grammys with a total of six wins, including Best Dance/Electronic Music Album for the aforementioned album. The Renaissance tour kicked off in Sweden in May and ended in Kansas City in October.
Renaissance was Beyoncé’s first world tour as a solo act since Formation in 2016, hence the excitement surrounding it. Fans who attended were treated to a visually and musically breathtaking experience. All the elements, from the intricate staging and lighting to the dazzling costumes and diverse setlist, showcased Beyoncé’s artistry and strength as a performer.
FIFA Women’s World Cup
This year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup boasted a few firsts. It was the first to be hosted by more than one nation (Australia and New Zealand), the first to be hosted by more than one confederation, and the first to be held in the Southern Hemisphere.
Additionally, the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup saw the first-ever expansion to 32 teams, similar to the format used by the men’s World Cup. This expansion allowed more nations to compete and showcase their talent.
The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup also broke viewership and attendance records, selling over 1.7 million tickets, breaking the previous record set by Canada in 2015 of 1.35 million tickets.
Spain made history by winning their first-ever Women’s World Cup, highlighting the strength of their women’s football program and the Spanish team’s commitment to the sport. The final, which saw Spain victorious over England at Stadium Australia in Sydney, broke television viewing records worldwide.
The Super Bowl LVII
The 2023 Super Bowl was packed with many memorable moments, both on and off the field. The thrilling season concluded with a close game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. After trailing by 10 points in the fourth quarter, the Chiefs mounted a comeback, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35.
The half-time show, featuring pop star Rihanna, entertained live audiences as well as TV viewers worldwide. It was her first live performance in five years, and she performed some of her most popular hits, including “Only Girl (in the World)” and “We Found Love,” on elevated platforms suspended high above the field via wires.
The half-time show also served as a pregnancy reveal for Rihanna. During the show, Rihanna opened her jacket, showing off a baby bump. Rihanna made further history as the first pregnant woman to perform at the Super Bowl.
